All Things Spicy

I’m a mood reader. I want so badly to be a bookstagrammer but it’s so hard for me. A) I can’t find books that keep my attention and B) I can never stop what I’m doing or make time to actually read.

Some might find it weird because I’m a writer at heart (just recently a published author) and you know what they say - you can’t be a good writer unless you read LOTS of books.

That’s an opinion I have for another conversation BUT I want to talk spice! I’m a romance girl. I love all the cheesy gooey love stories, the swoony one liners, and oh how The Last Song makes my heart melt.

There’s so many romance books on the shelves that there shouldn’t be a problem with finding one that keeps my attention - there’s just one problem. Most all romance books have three things in common.

Spice, Smut, and R-rated content.

Ahem, excuse me. For anyone who thinks that either of those three things are romantic, that’s no romance at all. It’s porn.

Spice or Smut is now referred to ‘spice’ by the kids now-a-days, but it’s just a term for reading about sex. Don’t get me wrong. Sex is a good thing but when we can’t read a good romance book without extreme sexual content it’s not just a problem, but a crisis.

It’s disheartening to have to content check books when we go to book stores and find a book that peeks are interest.

It’s incredibly vile to see fellow readers make fun of those who like their books closed door (a term for books with no sexual content on the page.)

It’s shameful that we’re labeling these books for young adults and shoving all these false values of romantic relationships into their faces so they can lust instead of striving for true love.

Porn and Lust don’t do anything good for our hearts, souls, or eyes. They destroy our standards of love and relationships, create addictions that will harm us more than we know, and take away these private and special moments between man and wife.

It’s not just affairs and cheating that harm relationships and marriages but it’s also harmful to read and watch porn and sexual intercourse. It’s the same as taking part in sexual actions with another person because it still brings us to have lustful feelings and emotions and can make our minds stray and wander further.

Bestseller, Colleen Hoover has tons of books that are labeled as romance being made into block buster movies. But, Hoover’s books are far from anything you should read or let your teen devour.

These books are described as reads with mature themes and graphic sex.

It absolutely hurts my heart when I see women reading these books in public or to see how monumental these books and movies have become in today’s world.

This is nothing negatively directed to Ms. Hoover. There are so many gifted authors in this world that can use their writing for so much good and stories that are wholesome and targeted as mature by without the sexual content.

I have made a promise to myself, future readers, and to God that I will never write books with spice or smut. I will always use my passion to point right back to God in whatever I write - a devotional or romance.
