BC: Can you explain your background with music?
NG: “Well I’ve been singing ever since I was little. I started writing when I was a teenager. I didn’t really start pursuing music until I was about 17 or 18. What started everything for me was Youtube. I posted cover songs to get my name out there. After a little while I had some success with that, in the form of a viral video. I’ve been lucky enough to make my living writing and touring original music ever since.”
BC: Was there a pinpoint moment you knew you wanted to make music a career?
NG: “Music has always been such a big part of my life, so I always knew it would be there for me somehow. But I think that after seeing a U2 concert in person as a kid, I was hooked. I knew then that I wanted to make music my life and not just a part of it.”
BC: What’s the ultimate dream for your music?
NG: “My ultimate goal is to build a loyal community of listeners around my music and to be playing until I’m an old man. I hope that listeners hear honesty and authenticity in my music and can relate on a personal level to the stories that I tell.”
BC: Was there something other than music that you were equally or more passionate about?
NG: “No, actually. Music has always been the main thing for me. I started writing when I was fourteen or fifteen and I just fell in love with it.”
BC: What does being a singer/entertainer mean to you?
NG: “It means connecting to people on a personal level with my music. Making them smile, laugh and sometimes cry because they identify with something that I’ve written.”
BC: What is your favorite thing to write about?
NG: “Anything sad,” Guthrie laughs, “For some reason I’ve always gravitated towards the darker side of songwriting.”
BC: Your album, ‘Blue Wall’ is set to be released January 14th, what are you most excited for with this album?
NG: “I’m really just excited to finally get it out into the world. It's been a very long time coming. I've been working on these songs for a few years now and I'm really hoping that they can connect with people the same way that they connect with me.”
BC: Why did you pick, ‘Only Light You Need’ as the single from this album?
NG: “In these crazy times that we have all been living through, I think it’s easy to get overwhelmed by it all. Easy to forget what and who you really have. This song is meant to be a helpful reminder to focus on the light when things get dark.”
BC: Was there a song or multiple songs that you had to cut from this album?
NG: “Most of the songs on the record are songs that my band and I had been touring with for quite a while before we came into the studio. A lot of the vetting process was done on the road, so I had a good idea of which songs were going to make the cut.”
BC: What is your favorite song from the record?
NG: “I think I’d have to say, ‘Blue Wall’ is my favorite off the album. The song is about my hometown and it always makes me appreciate this beautiful area that I’m from, here in Upstate South Carolina.”
BC: Was there a particular inspiration for this album?
NG: “Going into it I didn’t have a specific intention. Now, that I listen to the album as a whole I think the main message is to take stock of what you have. Find joy in the relationships you have while you have them.”
BC: Is there a person or group of people that heard the album in full for the first time?
NG: “Usually the first person to hear any new songs of mine is my brother, Ian. Not only is he my best friend but my drummer, recording engineer and co-producer.”
BC: Who are some dream collaborations for you?
NG: “I would love to work with Brandi Carlile someday. I really love her approach to music. I also think that working with Dave Cobb in the future would be a really good fit.”
BC: Since we’re coming up to the holidays, do you have any Christmas traditions?
NG: “Most of my family is from Alabama so I try to spend Christmas down there with everyone. My grandmother has a giant Christmas tree that goes up every year and I’ve very excited to see it again after missing last year because of the Pandemic.”
BC: What is your favorite Holiday food?
NG: “Probably Pecan Pie. My Grandmother’s Chess Pie is a close second.”
BC: And, your favorite Christmas song?
NG: “River by Joni Mitchell.”
