It’s been a heavy day full of tragedy and emotions. I haven’t been able to comprehend this senseless act, thinking about it all day, unable to step away from it for even a moment.
I have been trying to find the words, I have been trying to figure out what the perfect thing to say is, but I think sometimes the most important words come when you don’t have all the answers and most certainly not all the words. I also don’t think there is anything you can say for a moment like this that would be deemed perfect.
Charlie Kirk was a son, a grandson, a husband, a father, a friend, and a man of God. He was only thirty-one years old when a senseless act of cruelty was carried out this morning, ending this man’s life.
Charlie’s devastating death is far from a political problem. Death should not be political - it should not be the reason some people cheer because of their political standpoints that a person of the republican party has been assassinated. And, it definitely should not be the reason to carry out a murderous plot.
While Kirk did indeed speak about his political views and created a large platform to discuss them (Mark 16:15), it shouldn’t have cost him his life. Kirk’s job gave college students the ability to share their beliefs and, if they so chose, engage in peaceful debate with him on college campuses all around the country.
In every interaction Charlie had with those who had democratic beliefs, he was never aggressive or showed hatred towards anyone. He was persuasive, stood on the truth, and challenged college attendees to think for themselves.
Instead of wielding a weapon or throwing signs in people’s faces, screaming profanities and opinions, Charlie wielded the truth that came from the Bible, which is where so many people accused Charlie of being offensive. It wasn’t because of His words, but God’s word, which was the base that he stood on in every debate and in every speech he took part in.
This is modern-day martyrdom, and I have no doubt in my mind that when Charlie arrived in Heaven today, God was pleased with him, speaking over him, “Well done, my good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21-23).
The diabolical mind that shot Charlie has killed a man of integrity, strength, and truth, but he has also taken away a loving and faithful husband and father. This pain is something that Erika Kirk and Charlie’s children will have to live with for the rest of their lives.
My heart has been shattered all day from the news, but there has been an even greater weeping for the people behind keyboards who are celebrating Charlie’s death and are happy over this act of evil, which is vile and disgusting.
Take the politics out of it, because while they are important, they are not the most important thing. The most important thing is human dignity and life, and to mock the death of someone who died in a devastating way is quite possibly the most evil and corrupt human nature I have ever witnessed.
I don’t think I will ever get used to seeing Charlie Kirk’s name on the news in the same sentence as shot and dead. I get sick to my stomach seeing pictures of him and prior reels that were simultaneously showing up on my feed all day.
The only comfort I have is knowing that Charlie is with Jesus. He is wrapped in the arms of His Lord and Savior. I also know that the legacy he has left behind is remarkable, and what He has done for the kingdom of God is tremendous.
My heart aches for the family he leaves behind. His children, who will now grow up without a father, his wife, who will now grow old alone, and his parents, who are now burying their child.
Please pray for Erika Kirk and their babies and respect their suffering and grief.
Rest in Peace, Charlie Kirk. You are one of the greats.
